I love this question. Why? What’s the point? If I can handle my credit cards and we are making a good living why go debt free?
My answer is simple. At some point in time, an emergency will happen, a job will be lost, maybe a death in the family, some unexpected life event will happen. Not everything works perfectly as planned. In my house, we have experienced such a situation. A situation that could have left us wondering what to do wondering if we should go or stay? Since we are debt free, this was an easy question to answer. Go when our situation needs us to go. And it truly wasn’t a big deal, financially. It was a no brainer that we would need to go. This was a family emergency and we needed to be where the family was, across the country. And it wasn’t a big deal financially. Can you imagine? Planning a last minute trip to be with your family when they need you and it not be a huge financial burden? There was no argument between my husband and I. The conversation we had wasn’t a conversation of “if” we should go, it was a conversation of “when”. How long would it take me to get a suitcase packed?
Can you imagine? No credit cards were used. No need to max out anything to get across the country, buy meals, arrange a funeral, take off work, and no financial strain on our bank account. This is my answer as to, why? Because life happens, unexpected changes are inevitable, unplanned events arise and they need to be worked through. Life has a way of throwing curveballs and that is why financial freedom is necessary.
